Abstract:
|
Building strong connections with students can be challenging at a large institution. The Appreciative Advising Model is a six phase advising approach that is designed to increase student success. The first phase of the model is 'Disarm', in which the goal is to 'make a positive first impression with the student, build rapport, and create a safe, welcoming space.' (qtd. APPRECIATIVE ADVISING, n.d.). Advisors and office staff from the Arts and Letters Advisement Center at California State University, Los Angeles will share examples of how their office displays and events have helped to 'disarm' students and led to breakthroughs in advising sessions. Attendees will be given an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to come up with creative designs and events for their own Advisement offices. Advising professionals and office staff who are looking to create an office culture that facilitates building rapport with students are encouraged to attend this session. |
