Abstract: Effect of graduate program culture on student success for women of color in S.T.E.M. doctoral programs
Women of Color (WOC) in S.T.E.M. graduate programs face multiple barriers to program completion. There is a significant drop in retention at the transition from undergraduate to graduate school (Ong, et al, 2011). My research explores how graduate departments can foster a culture that mitigates stereotype threat and promotes a sense of belonging, and how these factors contribute to graduation outcomes in STEM graduate programs. Discussion includes: Steps successful programs are taking to recruit and retain WOC; Recommendations on how graduate departments might shift the culture to support students of color and promote a sense of belonging; and successfully complete and graduate their programs of study.
