Title: First Nation First Gen First Year: Following the Stories of Indigenous Students in a Canadian Polytechnic
Lead Presenter: Jean Dube
Date: October 03, 2018    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: N 132 A
Abstract: For the students supported by Chinook Lodge issues of poverty, addiction and not knowing how to navigate the post-secondary education system amplify first-year challenges. In spite of these hurdles there has been a marked increase in the number of Indigenous students attending and succeeding at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Using portraits developed from interviews and conversations, the stories of Indigenous students will be told with attention to the challenges they faced, as well as the culturally appropriate supports and institutional resources that helped students succeed academically and personally. The presentation will look at the ways that these supports have overcome the challenges and led to the growing success of our Indigenous students
