Abstract:
|
International undergraduate Chinese students are entering American higher education institutions at an increasing rate each year. In addition to facing the same challenges as other international students, such as transitioning to a new environment and education system; international undergraduate Chinese students experience unique challenges, such as unfamiliarity with general education, flexible curriculum, multiple extracurricular opportunities and academic advising (Galinova & Giannetti, 2014). This presentation will give audience members a better understanding of international Chinese students' transition to college and best practices for advising this population. The presenter will also discuss findings of a doctoral dissertation on academic advisors' perceptions describing their stories relating to language impact and cultural differences when advising international undergraduate Chinese students. Academic advising approaches used by the academic advisors in the study will also be explored. |
