Title: The Art of Advising International Students: Insights from My Journey as an International Student, an Advisor, and a Mother
Lead Presenter: Xiumei Long
Date: October 03, 2018    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: N 125 B
Abstract: Faculty and advisors often find it challenging to engage international students. To shed light on why this happens, the presenter will take us on her journey as an international student in the US. She will also discuss common challenges facing international students from her academic and career advising perspective. Drawing insight from her upbringing and education in China and her experience raising a child in the US, as well as personal stories of her international students from all over the world, the presenter demonstrates how differences in educational practices as well as parental and societal expectations inform the way international students approach their US education. The presenter will also offer individual and group advising tips proven to have successfully motivated international students to be more engaged.
