Title: Stories as Wealth: Validating Student's Voices in Transition
Lead Presenter: Raquel Fong
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: N 225 A/B
Abstract: Individuals experience a magnitude and multitude of transitions such as going from high school to college. Transitions are continuous and nuanced. The resources, support, and strategies to manage transitions varies by individual. The structures and support built by institutions assumes the type and level of support students need to be academically successful in college. Higher education may not acknowledge or value the assets and strengths of all students. This session explores the use of validating advising practices to affirm, support, and empower students. Through validating practices, advisors elicit student stories to help students leverage their strengths and assets towards their holistic development. The interactive session will include strategies for helping students to identify and apply their assets as strengths during their transition to college.
