Abstract:Thriving through the University Odyssey: Using Strengths as an Intervention with First-Gen Students

Just as Odysseus encountered unexpected obstacles in his quest, first-generation college students may face unforeseen barriers to thrive intellectually, socially, and psychologically. How can university leaders and advisors effectively serve students who will come from increasingly diverse social backgrounds? Drawing upon research from over 20 studies and the experiences of first generation students, this presentation will outline a strengths-approach which equips students with a perspective to thrive in their university journey. Through activities and discussion, participants will identify their own strengths, synthesize how they can utilize these to improve their practice, and model this approach to the students they advise. Learn why a strengths-focus can move university services away from a deficit-approach with students and how it contributes to a more inclusive campus environment.
