Abstract:Guiding Students Through the Journey: Utilizing Advanced Motivational Interviewing Techniques
Students around the world are experiencing change in their individual journeys through life and sometimes become stuck when faced with making their own decisions. To paraphrase the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, the only constant in our lives is change. As presented during the last conference, academic advisors can utilize the principles and techniques in Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help students work through their ambivalence to change while maintaining their autonomy. This presentation isa follow-up and utilizes more advanced techniques for those that already have foundational MI exposure within the scope of the advisement interaction. Attendees will have multiple opportunities to review, apply, and improve their use of MI techniques. Each attendee will leave with a handout to guide practical ways to talk to students to elicit change.
