Abstract:
|
Adult learners balance multiple roles including work, family, and academics, making their educational journey uniquely complex. Effective advising for this population requires flexible, student-centered approaches that recognize these realities, especially at institutions that primarily serve traditional-aged students. This session introduces two key frameworks: McClusky's Theory of Margin on balancing demands and resources, and Knowles' Adult Learning Theory on self-directed learning. Through these lenses, participants will reflect on their own institutional structures and challenges and conceptualize ways advisors can provide more holistic support and intentionally connect our adult learners to campus resources and foster resilience and achievement. Attendees will explore practical advising strategies that help advisors meet adult learners where they are, empower them to persist, and support them as they pursue their educational and career goals while managing the demands of adult life. |
