Running on the Wrong OS: Meeting Students in the Middle of the Motivation Shift
Many college students enter higher education still running a K-12 motivational "operating system" designed for external accountability and compliance-one that begins to break down in a college environment. College success, however, increasingly depends on intrinsic motivation, self-regulation, and purpose-driven decision-making. This session explores how academic advisors can support students in transitioning from externally managed learning toward internal direction and self-authorship. Rather than treating motivation as a fixed trait or student deficit, the session reframes motivational challenges as developmental and contextual. Through conceptual framing and guided reflection, participants will examine how advising relationships can support student problem solving, decision-making, and meaning-making by connecting academic choices to identity, purpose, and future direction-particularly during periods of transition, uncertainty, or academic difficulty. |
