Session #: 206(LEC)
Title: Need a Buddy? Take a Buddy! Demonstrating Understanding to Support Student Wellbeing
Lead Presenter: Rebecca Weichman
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Room: Virtual 3
Abstract: Once upon a semester, the presenter pinned a baggie of animal erasers to a bulletin board under a note reading: 'Need a buddy? Take a buddy!' She thought the engineering students who often passed that bulletin board could use a bit of joy to counteract their stress. When the baggie emptied before the end of the week, the presenter thought it a phenomenon worth exploring. (And restocked the 'buddies.') In this presentation, the presenter will introduce the concept of 'felt understanding' (Du et al., 2024) as a potential explanation of why those 'buddies' may have been so popular and how they might have positively impacted the students who 'adopted' them. Participants will also share ideas for enhancing their own students' felt understanding. They will leave with actionable recommendations!
