Abstract:
|
Mentoring and advising doctoral students present unique challenges, particularly for those in the dissertation phase. Unlike their undergraduate or master's experiences, doctoral students must navigate new academic expectations and interpersonal challenges. For students from underrepresented racial or ethnic backgrounds, these challenges may be compounded by feelings of isolation and difficulty finding community in new environments. This presentation explores strategies for effectively supporting doctoral students, with special consideration for those from underrepresented groups. It will be useful for faculty advisors, primary role advisors, and administrators seeking to enhance their support for these students. Research highlights the value of peer mentoring and structural support systems. Additionally, practical solutions, such as identifying local networks will be discussed. By implementing these strategies, institutions can create a more inclusive and supportive environment, improving doctoral student retention and success. |
