Abstract:
|
According to the Neurodiversity Directory, approximately 15-20% of the global population is neurodivergent. Increasingly, students who identify as neurodivergent are choosing to attend college and higher education programs while still facing higher drop-out rates than their neurotypical peers. Neurodivergent students face unique challenges in a college setting. Academic advising is one path to helping students to feel confident in their identities. Academic advisors, while not mental health counselors, also support student mental health which is especially important for neurodivergent learners. Many strategies and tools have shown to be effective in supporting neurodivergent students in college and will be discussed in this session from both research and personal experience of the presenters. Student and faculty perspectives will also be shared. |
