Abstract:
|
Why do some students shut down, escalate, or appear 'unmotivated' during advising appointments? This interactive workshop explores how stress responses, cognitive overload, executive functioning challenges, and identity threat shape student behavior in emotionally complex meetings. Grounded in self-efficacy theory, cognitive load research, and transition theory, participants will work in pairs to analyze realistic advising scenarios and practice neuroscience-informed response strategies. Through structured case labs, live script drafting, and guided reflection, attendees will learn how language choices influence regulation, belonging, and student agency. The session also addresses advisor emotional labor and boundary-setting practices that promote sustainable, inclusive advising. Participants will leave with practical communication tools, brief regulation techniques, and implementation strategies they can immediately apply across diverse advising contexts. |
