Abstract:
|
The changes to federal student aid introduced in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act present major hurdles for graduate students in helping professions and their advisors. By reclassifying fields like social work, nursing, and education as 'non-professional,' the law reduces loan access for part-time students, changes advising around mid-semester course withdrawals, and narrows Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility in ways that may deter students from pursuing helping professions at all. Beyond the financial implications, the reclassification risks demoralizing prospective and current students. Using an MSW program at a large research university as a case study, this session examines these challenges for academic advisors and offers a framework for supporting students navigating enrollment decisions under the new guidelines. |
