Title: Does Format Matter? Comparing Advising Experiences in Medical School
Lead Presenter: Pauline Smith
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: This poster presents findings from a mixed methods study comparing medical students' experiences with online and in person advising through a developmental advising framework. Data from 275 students revealed that both modalities effectively met expectations for more than 90% of participants, but each supported different developmental needs. Online advising offered convenience, autonomy in scheduling, and a comfortable environment for routine academic conversations. These aligns with developmental advising's emphasis on student agency and self directed engagement. In contrast, in person advising fostered stronger relational connection, emotional support, and richer communication, reflecting the framework's core focus on rapport, trust, and holistic student development. Challenges differed by modality: technical issues were most common online, while logistical barriers affected in person sessions.
Qualitative themes underscored that students value personalization, rapport, timely communication, and accessibility across formats, which are all all central components of developmental advising. Integrating the developmental framework with these results, the poster recommends a structured hybrid model that preserves relational depth while expanding flexibility and student choice. This approach leverages the complementary strengths of each modality and supports developmental outcomes such as autonomy, connection, and sustained engagement.
