Abstract:
|
Peer coaching in higher education has been shown to positively influence student persistence, learning, and academic engagement. Our STEM learning community for first time in college (FTIC) students integrates proactive advising with undergraduate peer coaching to deliver just in time interventions for students struggling in high DFW gateway courses. This model expands advising capacity, increases timely outreach, and provides students with early, consistent academic support.
In this session, attendees will learn how peer coaches can be incorporated into specialized advising programs, the criteria and training used to prepare peer coaches, the communication timeline that guides their outreach, and the methods used to monitor program effectiveness. This presentation is relevant for any advisor or institution seeking to enhance proactive advising efforts by leveraging undergraduates as peer coaches. |
