Abstract:
|
Academic advisors influence retention, progression, and student belonging daily, yet their expertise is often excluded from institutional decision-making processes. Although advising scholarship affirms the impact of relational and developmental practice on student success (NACADA, 2020), advisor insight is not systematically integrated into governance and strategic planning. This session positions strategic advocacy as a core leadership competency essential to the professionalization of advising. Participants will examine frameworks for aligning advising expertise with institutional priorities, translating frontline student insight into executive-level language, and building sustainable influence within governance structures. Through applied case analysis and practical tools, attendees will develop strategies to move from peripheral participation to recognized partnership. By embedding advisors in decision-making ecosystems, institutions strengthen policy design, improve implementation coherence, and advance student-centered institutional effectiveness. |
