Abstract:
|
Advising undecided and exploratory students effectively can be complex and difficult. What are the common challenges in advising them? How can advisors meet their developmental needs? Are there any significant strategies advisors can use to improve advising efficiency? Our session will discuss how adopting a developmental approach is advantageous through shifting the focus from choosing a major to a broader process of intentional exploration, self-discovery, and overall development. We will address key competencies for using such an approach, discuss Abes, Jones and McEwen's Multiple Dimensions of Identity and Kegan's Constructive Developmental Framework as theoretical tools, utilize case studies to illustrate advising strategies for different student groups including international students, high achievers, first-gens, and probationary students, and highlights the importance of tapping into students' sense-making mechanism and helping them develop meta-cognitive capacity in the exploration process. |
