Abstract:
|
First-generation students often experience greater challenges when transitioning to college. Many are unsure of what questions to ask, may hesitate to seek help, and are less likely to take advantage of available campus resources or become actively involved in the campus community. Although many institutions recognize the barriers first-generation students face and have implemented targeted programs to support them, participation in these initiatives is not always consistent.
Intentional advising plays a critical role in bridging this gap. By proactively engaging students, identifying unspoken needs, and fostering meaningful connections to resources, advisors can significantly impact first-generation students' academic success and sense of belonging. This session will provide practical tools, strategies, and best practices for implementing intentional advising approaches that enhance the college experience and improve retention outcomes for first-generation students. |
