Abstract:
|
As artificial intelligence reshapes higher education, institutions are increasingly integrating predictive analytics, automated degree planning platforms, and chatbot technologies into academic advising infrastructures. While these innovations enhance operational efficiency and data-informed decision-making, scholarship consistently affirms that sustained advisor-student relationships remain central to persistence and learning. NACADA (2006) conceptualizes advising as intentional, educational interactions that synthesize students' experiences and promote holistic development. Empirical research further demonstrates that proactive, relational advising significantly influences engagement and retention, particularly among first-generation students (Kuh, 2008; Swecker, Fifolt, & Searby, 2013). Yet, limited scholarship critically interrogates how AI integration may recalibrate advising toward transactional efficiency. This session advances a human-centered framework that positions AI as an enhancement, not a replacement, for developmental advising practice, preserving empathy, ethical discernment, and culturally responsive engagement. |
