Abstract:
|
As we consider the role of the advisor in the student experience, we often hear the dichotomy of a prescriptive approach that prioritizes telling students what courses to take (White, 2024) versus a developmental approach that focuses on the 'individual student's concerns, needs, and aspirations' (Gordon, 2019). This presentation explores what might be possible when we look beyond the prescriptive - developmental binary and shift toward an approach that weaves knowledge of the student and educator to support a student's journey. The purpose of this presentation is to position advising as a relational, co-constructed process rather than a transaction exchange through the Appreciative Advising framework (Bloom et al., 2008) and Waymaking practices (Isaacs, 2022). |
