Abstract:
|
Universities are curious ecosystems. Thousands of people packed into lecture halls, labs, offices, and classrooms and yet a surprising number quietly feel like the only one in the room. 'Otherness' thrives in those little gaps between people: role, identity, hierarchy, culture, expectations. Let's share and discuss our experience to begin to close those gaps, turning institutions from collections of individuals into communities that notice one another.
The goal of this presentation is to humanize the experience of otherness in higher education and examine how it impacts students, faculty, and staff. While conversations about belonging often focus on students, faculty and staff also experience moments of feeling different, unseen, or disconnected due to identity, role, or institutional culture. When unaddressed, these experiences can affect engagement, collaboration, job satisfaction, and overall campus environment.
This session will explore otherness as a shared experience and highlight academic advising as a meaningful space for fostering connection and inclusion. Participants will identify practical strategies and reflective tools that can be used in advising sessions, trainings, and campus initiatives to promote inclusive engagement and strengthen a sense of belonging. |
