Abstract:
|
Advisors that practice social curiosity, and affirmation can challenge students to use those same skills to connect on campus and learn from those connections. We can show students that we understand how complex the process of finding community can be, help them understand what is getting in their way, and why engagement matters. Advisors can nudge students to cultivate belonging skills by helping them see the potential rewards of risking discomfort. Encouraging students to reflect honestly about what they want from involvement and how they want to connect on campus often leads to social development and academic success. Students who are natural and eager connectors need space to make meaning of their involvement, connect it to their learning, and develop as campus leaders. Advisors can challenge them the crucial skill of calling others into their established communities to make them more vibrant, rewarding, and inclusive. |
