Title: The Reality of the Graduate School Conversation for First-Generation, Low-Income Students
Lead Presenter: Leilani-Marie Gonzalez
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Graduate school is often framed as a pathway to upward mobility, promising expanded career opportunities and higher earnings. However, for many first-generation, low-income students, the realities of graduate education are more complex. Misconceptions about affordability, work expectations, and family responsibilities can significantly shape decision-making. In addition, full-time work expectations, cost-of-living pressures, and familial financial responsibilities may limit the possibility of immediate graduate enrollment. Drawing from advising practice and personal experience, this session examines the structural and cultural barriers influencing graduate school planning. Participants will explore common student misunderstandings about graduate funding, analyze how full-time work obligations influence graduate school decisions and discuss financial and family pressures that uniquely affect this student population. The session emphasizes strengthening advising practices through transparent, culturally aware conversations that support informed and realistic post graduation and career planning.
