Abstract:
|
Graduate advising plays a critical role in student persistence, yet the work of primary-role graduate advisors remains underexamined. This presentation shares findings from a qualitative case study exploring how these advisors perceive their contributions to graduate student success and how they collaborate with faculty advisors in environments shaped by institutional culture and faculty relationships. Drawing on interviews with advisors from institutions across the nation, the session highlights four themes: relational foundations of advising, professional expertise and boundary negotiation, shared responsibility with faculty, and institutional positioning. Findings illuminate how advisors manage role overlap, advocate within institutional systems, and perform the often invisible labor that sustains graduate student progress. Attendees will gain insight into how graduate advisors define their roles, manage areas of overlap with faculty, and strengthen collaborative, complementary advising practices. |
