Abstract:
|
Every day, advisors see ample evidence that their efforts make a difference in students' lives. Those with large caseloads, however, experience nagging concerns about meeting the needs of the 'no shows.' Surveys indicate that many college students rarely meet with an advisor. The use of positive micro-messages allows advisors to forge meaningful connections even with students they see infrequently. These subtle but powerful words or phrases can communicate empathy and boost student morale.
Micro-messaging also allows advisors to capitalize on the 'strength of weak ties.' The social-science theory offers the paradoxical idea that connections with mere acquaintances can enhance self-knowledge, sense of belonging, and even cognitive growth. Participants will test the theory in real time as they brainstorm with partners about using micro-messages to help students beat the odds and persist in college. |
