Abstract:
|
The feminist identity development theory (Downing & Roush, 1989) expands upon Black racial identity development theory (Cross, 1971) to conceptualize feminism as a series of stages reflecting increasing awareness and commitment. This phenomenological study explores how primary-role academic advisors who identify as womxn and feminists understand their feminist identity and incorporate it into their advising practice. Utilizing feminist identity development theory as a base, this study examines the intersection of personal identity and professional practice in higher education. The study highlights the role of feminist academic advisors as advocates for students, predominantly in fostering belonging and persistence in higher education. As institutions become more diverse, advisors who embrace feminist and social justice-oriented perspectives may play a critical role in student retention and success. |
