Abstract:

Guiding Students to Succeed through Collaborative Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is designed to strengthen a student's commitment to their academic goals, placing the advisor in a helper role- rather than a hierarchical role. This interactive presentation explores the four core skills of MI and ways that academic advisors can utilize MI techniques to build collaborative relationships with "at-potential" students and encourage behavioral changes for student success. Through practical scenarios, participants will be able to practice advanced MI skills one-on-one with other participants and brainstorm ways to approach conversations with "at-potential" students in a non-judgmental environment. This presentation is useful for newer advisors to build new skills, and for more senior advisors to enhance strategies they already know and utilize these skills to help them dig deeper with students. |
