Abstract:
|
Students with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the College Experience
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to an array of physical and mental health issues as well as lower levels of educational attainment. ACEs also present as factors in the increased number of students seeking treatment at university and college mental health agencies (Wright et al., 2009). With an awareness of the impacts, the American College Health Association (ACHA) has called for trauma-informed training for faculty and staff (Hoch et al., 2015).
This session explores the science behind the impacts of ACEs as well as the ways in which academic advisors can respond to the need for increased levels of support. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the impacts of trauma and how they may implement this knowledge into their advising practice. |
