Abstract:

Advising Longevity: How long can you last?
Academic advising is recognized as playing a key role in student success. Sadly, advisor burnout and low advisor retention rates are currently plaguing higher education. Using research, studies, surveys, and national data, this session will connect the critical importance of advising relationships and the need to maintain advising staff. A panel of experienced advisors will answer pre-scripted questions about work environments, management/supervision styles, personal motivations, advising philosophies, and healthy habits that have enabled their longevity in their profession. The audience will be anonymously polled, through epoll, to discover average years of service, caseloads, and support in advising. This data will be combined with data collected at institution, state, and regional conference presentations, for an audience-based picture of advising longevity, along with a discussion of next steps. |
