Abstract: Telling the story of advising through data visualization

As institutions of higher education increasingly rely on data-informed decision-making, academic advisors need proficiency in data visualization to tell meaningful stories about their work. With a plethora of tools available to quickly visualize data, it can be overwhelming to determine the optimal way to present data to ensure easy comprehension by the intended audience. Attendees will learn how to apply the basic principles of simple, effective, and ethical data visualization to support the stories they want to tell about academic advising. Armed with these skills, attendees will apply what they've learned to real-world scenarios, with a focus on selecting and designing the best visualization rather than how to use a specific software platform. Attendees will return to their campus with resources to support implementation of their visualizations in their preferred visualization software.
