Abstract:

Taking a Break from Student Success
Inspired by Janet Halley's (2006) provocative text, Split Decisions: How and Why to Take a Break from Feminism, I take on an axiomatic concept in academic advising today: student success. Given the fact that nearly every advisor is subject to the demands of student success but there is little agreement on exactly what student success is (Schulenberg, 2023; Wallace & Wallace, 2016), it seems prudent to use critical conceptual analysis, a humanities-oriented method, to consider not only what the varying definitions of the term mean but also what effects it has. By taking a break, my hope is not to abolish student success entirely, but instead to see it less naively and more disloyally as simply one tool among many in understanding and doing the work of academic advising. |
