Conference Year: 2021
Session #: 169(LEC)
Title: Bringing Our Own Intersecting Identities and Experiences Into the Advising Relationship
Lead Presenter: Tim Cox
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Room: 200, DECC
Abstract: This interactive session will help advisors become more self-aware of the role their identities and experiences play in the advising relationship. Advisors will also be encouraged to use their whole selves to build stronger connections with students. Once connections are made, advisors can make emotionally, culturally, and professionally appropriate recommendations to help students make informed decisions. This strategy is called the 'intersubjective-relative approach.'

Participants will gain a greater self-awareness of salient and non-salient identities used in student interactions through two self-awareness activities: 'How I See Myself' and 'Deeper Look.' Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of the four-step intersubjective-relative advising approach and will have an opportunity to simulate their own identity negotiation and navigation in the culminating 'Theory to Practice' activity.
