Abstract:

Academic Advisors and Students' Need for Letters of Recommendation: Ways Advisors Can Help
This presentation provides actionable insights and resources on helping students with letters of recommendation. We will discuss 1) advising students on how to approach faculty for letters, and 2) whether/when/what advisors should write in letters. We will share survey results from 295 faculty involved in evaluating applicants for admission to graduate programs, highlighting preferences regarding types of letter writers and content. Attendees will gain 1) understanding of what graduate programs want (e.g. preferred letter writers, optimal content) 2) practical strategies for advising students on this important aspect of their academic journey 3) guidance for advisors on writing effective letters for advisees, including essential content, ideal length, and 'key words'. Examples will be provided to illustrate these points. |
