Abstract: Centering Minoritized Student Voices: Culturally Responsive Advising in Uncertain Political Contexts

Success for all students is a stated priority across higher education today. While institutions in different parts of the country may face challenges in serving varied student populations, including: Complex political contexts, caseload management and advisor retention; as academic advisors we also have opportunities to cultivate positive student success outcomes.

Join us to address how centering minoritized student voices in a framework of culturally responsive and holistic advising can allow us to continue to meet students where they're at, while valuing their strengths and lived experiences. This in turn can lead to greater retention, persistence and graduation rates (Almanzar 2021) as well as humanizing organizational cultures (Garcia 2019; Sanchez Ordaz, Reguerin and Sanchez 2020) that reflect who students are.
