Presentation Info and Handouts
  Code=334
Conference Year: 2021
Session #: 227(LEC)
Title: Educational Allyship 101
Lead Presenter: Timarie Franco
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Room: Jr. Ballroom B, DECC
Abstract: Allyship has become a buzzword over the past year or so, and it's role in education isn't always obvious. While it is clear we have a responsibility to our students to both confront inequality and use our positions of power to push for systemic change, it can be difficult to know exactly how to accomplish this while staying within our prescribed roles and keeping the focus on traditional measures of academic success. In this session we will explore how we can weave allyship into our practice, along with the barriers we may face in becoming effective allies and how to overcome them, with guided discussion and application-based strategies. Participants will depart with a solid understanding of allyship and a clear plan to better serve marginalized students at their home institutions.
