Title: Not in Kansas Anymore? Understanding Postsecondary Transition For Students With Disabilities
Lead Presenter: Elizabeth Smith
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: Jr. Ballroom D, DECC
Abstract: Have you ever found yourself confused in a foreign environment? Much like Dorothy's experience in the beginning of the classic Wizard of Oz movie, students with documented disabilities enter college life often confused and unable to advocate for themselves. This challenge stems from the significant disconnect between K-12 and postsecondary educational environments. These students are used to an educational environment where a team of professionals assume responsibility for meeting their academic needs. As a former K-12 educator and guidance counselor, postsecondary Disabilities Office Coordinator and now Academic Advisor, this presenter will share insightful information regarding the challenges these students are facing when they step foot on campus. When more is known about a student's past, advisors can better prepare them for a successful future.
