Abstract: A Unique Take on Advisor Retention: Professional/Personal Development Goals and Advisor Onboarding

The changing landscape of employment resulting from generational shifts in the workforce and the continued impact of the pandemic has tasked employers with determining how to retain top talent (Blount, 2022). This is particularly true for hiring and retaining Academic Advisors. Can outlining a clear professional and personal development path during the advisor onboarding process increase the likelihood of advisor retention? This presentation will focus on the onboarding processes of six advisors within a unit at a large public university. The individualized approach by which these advisors were onboarded resulted in the retention of 5 of the 6 advisors. Challenges encountered and lessons learned will also be discussed. Both advisors and administrators will benefit from attending this session.
