Title: Challenging Narratives: Developing Theory of Mind Capacities for Academic Advisors
Lead Presenter: Ryan Scheckel
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: 230/231, DECC
Abstract: Advisors are expected to be mind readers lots of the time. Some of the time we're not too bad at it! Okay, maybe it's more understanding another's perspectives than actually reading their mind, but why can we do that? And can we get better at it? How can we help ourselves and our colleagues develop what scholars refer to as Theory of Mind capabilities? Join us as we explore Peter Hagen's influential 2018 book, The Power of Story: Narrative Theory in Academic Advising, challenge a few of the narratives presented therein, add in an exciting amount of popular culture stories, and learn what it means to harness the power of narrative approaches in our practice, our training and development, and beyond!
