Abstract:
|
'The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.' -Mark Van Doren.
Advising as teaching is a concept that's been around for over 50 years (Crookston, 1972). Many of the advising as teaching articles that have been written over the years talk about characteristics that good teachers exhibit that can serve as a model for advisors, but what are some concrete ways for advisors to put pedagogical theory into practice? How can advisors effectively employ pedagogical techniques without explicit teaching backgrounds? In what ways can advisors see themselves as more confident educators? And how do advisors ensure they are honoring inclusivity, accessibility, and equity for all students. This presentation, co-facilitated by two former classroom teacher-turned advisors, aims to provide a roadmap to advising practitioners for how to bring more learning-outcome structure to student appointments. Attendees will come away from this session with practical tools for facilitation and formative assessment. |
