Abstract:
|
The pandemic left a surge of loss in its wake and many young adults remain mired in loneliness and self-doubt. The incidence of related mental-health symptoms such as anxiety and depression have spiked due to the social and educational disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
One promising but paradoxical remedy is the idea that interaction with mere acquaintances provides unexpected benefits, such as access to new ideas, novel worldviews, and an enhanced sense of belonging. Originally called "the strength of weak ties" by researchers, the theory has been applied to everything from cognitive growth to mental-health treatment. Participants in this session will test the theory in real time while they consider a host of practical applications to advising practice. |
