Title: The Devil Wears Khakis: An Examination of Dress Codes in Academic Advising
Lead Presenter: Stefany Sigler
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: 262, DECC
Abstract: Jean Fridays, spirit days, football jersey Mondays; These 'dress-down' days are exceptions to common dress codes, but in the 21st century, what purpose does a dress code serve in academic advising? Is the dress code designed to present an attainable model for our students? Representing the concept of 'dressing for the job you want' or 'appropriate attire' for students who may not be experienced with 'professionalism?' Or is the dress code a product of a bygone era where the concept of professionalism was designed to promote those who can fit within society's definition of historical hetero-white normalcy? This session, The Devil Wears Khakis: An Examination of Dress Codes in Academic Advising, will address the history of dress codes in higher education and the intersectionality between dress code, gender identity, race, and socio-economic status.
