Title: Advising as a Team: A New Approach to a Large Student Population
Lead Presenter: Masako Ura
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Octavius Ballroom, Promenade South
Abstract: Students' academic journeys can be more fulfilling when they are well-connected to their instructors, departments, and institutions. The psychology department at a large public university has grown significantly in the past five years, which has limited advising appointments and created unique challenges. To support a large student population more effectively and remove the barriers at an earlier stage, workshop-style advising was developed with the collaboration of peer mentors and graduate assistants. The students who were completing their first year were invited to our interactive workshops. The result indicated a significant increase in their self-efficacy in academic planning and navigating the department resources and opportunities. Participants will better understand a new advising approach via a workshop during this presentation. Attend this session to learn more about how to build an interactive workshop for a large student population.
