Title: Pandemic-Inspired Self-Guided Advising Tool Empowers Students, Boosts Enrollment
Lead Presenter: Michele Pavitt
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: Zoom Room 5
Abstract: The idea emerged from a pandemic-driven dilemma in the spring of 2020.

Despite conducting more than 1,200 one-to-one advising sessions for new, incoming fall 2020 students, our advising team faced a mounting backlog of accepted, unregistered students. Due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic, we were unable to keep pace with the demand for individualized advising meetings or offer in-person sessions. A remote group alternative, delivered through Zoom, attracted few participants.

The solution? An online, visually appealing tutorial, the self-guided advising tool, which offered key information to students in the form of quick videos. The tool guided students through login procedures, program requirements, and course registration. In follow-up meetings, advisors were able to focus on relationship building with students, rather than simply teaching the enrollment basics.
