Abstract:
|
With a significant proportion of undergraduate enrollment comprising individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) are uniquely positioned to foster academic achievement among students of color. Academic advising has emerged as a crucial support mechanism within MSIs, aiming to provide culturally sensitive guidance to enhance student success. However, gaps exist in understanding the training methods and competencies of academic advisors within MSIs. Through qualitative research, this presentation explores these gaps and aims to identify strategies for improving preparing academic and faculty advisors within MSIs. The findings indicate that MSIs are purposeful in their training endeavors, yet opportunities exist to innovate training methods to better equip faculty advisors and academic advisors. As a result, insights and recommendations are provided for practitioners looking to develop and advance training methods at their home institution. |
