Abstract: Best Practices: Tips for Building an Advisor Onboarding and Training Program. An advising office at a mid-sized private institution developed and implemented an interactive and strategic six-week training program for new advisor onboarding. The training is organized using a week-by-week progressive training experience supported through learning management system (LMS) modules which consist of university and departmental policies, advising processes, and all necessary training materials. New advisors engage in weekly assignments and assessments in the LMS, as well as peer-led trainings and shadowing. The training concludes with the advisor completing a final assessment before taking on their assigned student population. The presentation will outline our program and recommendations for attendees to implement a similar training program on their campuses. The presentation will be followed by a brief question and answer session.
