Abstract:
|
Advising with a Slant: Promoting Equity and Inclusion when 'DEI' is a Dirty Word.
In this presentation, we will discuss developments in higher education stemming from Texas' recent 'anti-DEI' legilastion, Senate Bill 17. Attendees will learn about SB 17, what it says (and what it doesn't), and emerging legal consensus provided to student services personnel at one state university. We will then shift to the presenter's reflections on how advisors can support social justice, personally and professionally, in a context where 'DEI' is legally forbidden. Enter, Advising with a Slant. Drawing on years of doctoral study in feminist and queer methods, we will examine 'queer' ways to advise that help to promote equity and inclusion without engaging in 'prohibited DEI work.' |
