Abstract:

According to the National Social Anxiety Center (2023), the fear of public speaking affects over 40% of the population, and is more prevalent than the fear of heights, the fear of falling, or the fear of spiders. And yet, most of us will have to give some sort of professional presentation during our careers, whether it be a simple advising meeting with a student or a formal speech at an academic conference. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1908) once wrote, "All the great speakers were bad speakers at first" (p. 188). That means we can all get better at it, so join me to learn how! Be the best speaker you can be, and give the type of presentation your attendees deserve! |
