Abstract:
|
The purpose of this study titled 'Trauma-Informed Educational Practice in Higher Education' was to explore the experiences of staff/faculty that directly support students coping with trauma within their roles at a large multi-campus graduate university for health sciences in Texas. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview and reflective journal entry. Results revealed that participants cared deeply for students and their success. This empathy at times led participants to experience role conflicts and a blurring of work-life boundaries that, on the extreme end, led to secondary traumatic stress. Needs for further training, dialogue, and student and staff resources to address issues of trauma at the research site were indicated. This study served to expand prior calls for trauma-informed educational practice (TIEP) in higher education to the graduate health sciences arena. |
