Title: Prioritizing the Needs of Disabled Students
Lead Presenter: Nancy Solari
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: In 'Prioritizing the Needs of Disabled Students, we look at the college experience from a disabled person's point of view. Participants will have four key takeaways: First, attendees will uncover ways to foster a culture of acceptance and understanding so students will feel validated in asking for accommodation or discussing their limitation. Second, participants will discover university graduate studies programs for disability studies emphasizing acceptance, understanding, accommodation, and proactive infrastructure design. Third, participants will identify and recognize instances in which 'letter of the law' adherence does not support the needs of disabled people. Finally, participants will analyze the experiences of everyday life for the disabled student, brainstorm solutions, and analyze their potential effectiveness. Attendees will leave the conference with a fresh perspective on serving the diversely-abled student population.
