Title: Advising Inside and Outside: Engaging and Empowering Students in Prison
Lead Presenter: Kathryn Mitchell
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: 233, DECC
Abstract: This presentation will explore avenues to empower students while incarcerated and experiencing higher education on 'the inside'. Participants will explore and practice utilizing a 'strengths-based' approach to advising and discover how to integrate this method of advising into their own practice.

Advisors have an opportunity to engage with and participate in the empowerment of each student. Empowering students using a strengths-based advising approach may lead to better-prepared students on the 'inside' and 'outside'. Participants will discover commonalities amongst incarcerated student populations and their own students, exploring best practices and strategies to empower all students.
